Vol. 55 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recommendations of Ports and Harbours Tribunal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he can state if it is proposed to introduce proposals for legislation at an early date to give effect to the recommendations of the Ports and Harbours Tribunal which were submitted to his Department in May, 1930.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is prepared to indicate if it is the intention of the Government to implement the recommendation of the Ports and Harbours Tribunal that pensions be made available for whole-time permanent officers of all harbour authorities and, as far as possible, on the same terms and conditions as are applicable under the Local Government Acts to officers of local authorities; whether it is necessary to introduce proposals for legislation in order to give effect to this recommendation, and, if so, whether it is his intention to promote such legislation in the present session.

I propose to answer Nos. 14 and 15 together. The recommendations of the Ports and Harbours Tribunal as regards harbour rates were implemented by the Harbours (Regulation of Rates) Act, 1934. The introduction of legislation to implement the other recommendations, including the recommendation as to pensions for whole-time permanent officers of harbour authorities is at present under consideration. It is not possible at this stage to fix a date for the introduction of any legislation which may be decided on.
