Vol. 55 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Planting of Trees.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of each county (a) the area and number of trees planted in each of the years 1929 to 1934 inclusive; (b) the total area planted subsequent to 1921, and (c) the area acquired for afforestation and not yet planted.

The total area of land and the approximate number of trees planted during each of the past six seasons are set out in a tabular statement which will be circulated in the Official Report of Dáil Debates.

The corresponding figures, county by county, are not readily available, but the information is being extracted and will be sent to the Deputy without delay.

The statement is as follows:—(a)

Season

Area Planted(acres)

Approximate No. of trees planted.

1928-29

3,547

7,094,000

1929-30

3,069

6,138,000

1930-31

3,565

7,130,000

1931-32

3,646

7,292,000

1932-33

3,564

7,128,000

1933-34

4,180

8,360,000

It is anticipated that the area planted during the season 1934-35 will exceed 5,000 acres. A considerable extension of nursery operations is taking place. This, it will be understood, is a necessary preliminary to the programme of forestry expansion.

(b) The total area of land planted subsequent to the planting season 1921-22 is 35,200 acres.

(c) The area of land acquired for afforestation and not yet planted is approximately 14,000 acres.
