Vol. 55 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Dispute.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the employees of the Telephone Section, St. John's Road Factory, Dublin, Department of Posts and Telegraphs, have threatened to withdraw their labour within a definite period as a demand for improved conditions of service; and whether in order to prevent a stoppage of work he is prepared to open negotiations with them with a view to an amicable settlement of the matters in dispute.

Mr. Boland

I am aware of the position. The claims made on behalf of the employees referred to have already been the subject of negotiation and the second part of the question does not therefore arise.

Is it the Minister's intention to let these men take drastic action without some effort at negotiation?

Mr. Boland

I have informed the Deputy that negotiations have been, going on and that, apparently, they are about to be brought to a conclusion by a strike.

Does the Minister not think that negotiations now, by interview or otherwise, would be better before a strike takes place and that they would be of general advantage to all?
