Vol. 55 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in County Dublin.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware of the widespread unemployment that exists in the district of Shankill, County Dublin; of the genuine desire for work amongst those unemployed; of the fact that work could be provided for all those unemployed if provision were made for connecting up the new houses at Shankill with the main drainage, installing a water supply and proper sanitary conveniences in the new houses, and in making the roads and paths leading to or abutting on those houses; and whether in view of the fact that the County Dublin Board of Health, through financial stringency, is unable to provide money to undertake those works, the Minister will recommend to the Minister for Finance that a grant should be given to the County Dublin Board of Health to enable those works to be undertaken forthwith and so relieve unemployment and give proper sanitary equipment to the houses.

My attention has been called to the desirability of providing improved services to the houses referred to, and I am prepared to accede to an application from the Dublin Board of Public Health for sanction to a loan for the purpose.
