Vol. 55 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Clare Wages.

Mr. P. Hogan

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he can state what wages are being paid to the workers employed on the construction of labourers' cottages at Sixmilebridge, County Clare.

I am informed by the Clare Board of Health and Public Assistance that the rates of wages being paid to the workers employed on the construction of labourers' cottages at Sixmilebridge are—

(a) skilled workers, £3 10s. 0d. per week:

(b) unskilled workers, £1 10s. per week.

Mr. Hogan

Is the Minister satisfied that these are the highest rates of wages paid in the area?

My information is that these wages are greater than the wages being paid in the district.

Mr. Hogan

Is the Minister aware that the Clare County Council pays 35/- a week and that the Clare County Council employs men in that area?

I do not know if what the Deputy states is correct or not, but my information is that the rates of wages paid are greater than those generally paid in the area.

Mr. Hogan

Would the Minister make further investigation on the basis of the information I have given him?

Any information the Deputy will give I will investigate.

And when making those investigations, will the Minister ask his colleague, the Minister for Agriculture, to make a similar investigation with regard to agricultural wages in this area with a view to raising them to at least 30/- a week?

That is a separate question.
