Vol. 55 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Overcrowding in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of primary schools in the County Borough of Dublin in which overcrowding exists, the number of pupils in such schools for whom there is official accommodation, the number of pupils on the roll, and the average number of pupils in attendance.

The regulations of the Department prescribe that ten square feet of floor space should be provided for each unit of the mean between the average attendance of pupils and the average number on rolls. On this basis there are 86 schools in the county borough in which the "mean" referred to is in excess of the floor space. The number of pupils for whom there is accommodation in these schools is 29,106; the average number of pupils on the rolls of these schools during the school year 1933-34 was 36,850, and the average daily attendance of pupils for that year 31,699.

In about 40 of these cases the excess is inconsiderable. The question of school accommodation in the Borough of Dublin is receiving special attention and it is hoped that the position will be considerably eased when the schemes for the erection of new schools and the reconstruction of existing buildings, at present under consideration, are completed.
