Vol. 55 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Clydesdale Sires.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it is his intention to restrict the use of Clydesdale sires to a radius within 10 miles of Cork City, and if he is aware that, in view of the growing demand for agricultural horses, such a regulation will be detrimental to the farming community.

Dr. Ryan

I am of opinion that sires of the Irish draught horse type are more suitable to the conditions of this country than sires of any imported breed. Accordingly, I am not prepared to accept Clydesdale sires for registration under the Department's Horse Breeding Scheme, 1935, for any area of County Cork save that included within a ten-mile radius of Cork City. Importers of pure-bred Clydesdale stallions in County Cork must submit such for inspection for licence purposes under the Horse Breeding Act, 1934. Any such stallions, passed sound and suitable, are entitled to be licensed.
