Vol. 56 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Competitive Exam. for Supervising Ganger.

asked the Minister for Lands whether there were two successive competitive examinations for candidates for the position of supervising ganger under the Gaeltacht Housing Scheme in the Cloughanealy district of County Donegal, and if so, if he will state why the candidate securing the highest place in the first examination was not appointed to the vacant position.

The Deputy is under a misapprehension as to the facts in relation to the steps taken to fill the post in question.

A large number of applications for the vacant post of housing ganger was received in the Department. These applications were referred to the area housing surveyor for a report as to whether any or all had the necessary qualifications for the post. Upon receipt of the required information a Departmental Selection Board consisting of the chief housing surveyor and the two local housing surveyors was appointed to select the most suitable candidate having regard to knowledge of building, experience and capacity to use and speak the Irish language. The appointment was offered to and accepted by the candidate placed first on the list as a result of the marks allotted.

Might I draw the Parliamentary Secretary's attention to the fact that he has not answered the first part of my question as to whether there were, in fact, two successive competitive examinations at which marks were allotted?

There were not.

There was only one?

One only.

And the man who got the highest marks got the job?

Yes, got the position.
