Vol. 56 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children on National School Rolls

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the number of children on the National School rolls at January 1st and July 1st in each of the last five years for which the information is available; (b) the number of such children under the age of seven years, and (c) the number over 14 years.

The following are the figures available under the heads in the Deputy's question:—

On 30th June, 1930

On 30th June, 1931

On 30th June, 1932

On 30th June, 1933

On 30th June, 1934

(a) No. of children on the rolls of National Schools

511,549

509,396

508,420

513,349

504,590

(b) No. of children under seven years of age on the rolls of National Schools

115,534

115,254

(c) No. of children 14 years of age and over on the rolls of National Schools

36,527

33,595

33,863

Official statistics are not obtained in respect of the 1st January in any year; and figures under head (b), for the years 1930, 1932 and 1934, and under head (c), for the years 1932 and 1934, have not been compiled.

The figures under heads (b) and (c), for the years for which they have not been compiled, would approximate, under head (b), to the figures for the years in the table and, under head (c), to the figures for the year 1933. The value of statistics for the years for which they are not available under these heads would not, in the circumstances, be commensurate with the labour involved.
