Vol. 56 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Agreement With Spain.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state the terms of the trade agreement recently entered into between the Governments of Saorstát Eireann and Spain.

The substance of the agreement is as follows:—The Spanish Government have allotted a quota of 333,000 eggs for the period 1st April, 1935, to 31st March, 1936.

The Saorstát Government in return have agreed to prevent the wrongful use of the geographical appellations of origin of certain categories of Spanish wines. The Saorstát Government have further agreed to stabilise, during the period of the agreement, Customs duties in respect of certain Spanish products imported into Saorstát Eireann, to give to Spain most-favoured-nation treatment in the allocation of quotas in respect of these products, and to allot to Spain a quota of 10,000 tons of oranges.

The exchange of notes containing the agreement will be laid on the Table of the House next week.

Perhaps the President would tell the House whether the imports from Spain to the Saorstát are of equal money value with the exports from the Saorstát to Spain? Is that provided for in the agreement?

I do not think that is so.
