Vol. 58 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Robe River.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the occupiers of lands along the Robe River, in Claremorris and Ballinrobe Unions, have recently suffered considerable damage to their crops through the flooding of that river, and if he will state the cause of delay by the Commissioners of Public Works in carrying out the scheme for the drainage of the Robe and tributaries, and when drainage operations will commence.

I have not received any information recently that the occupiers of land along the river Robe in claremorris and Ballinrobe Unions have suffered considerable damage to their crops through the flooding of that river, but I am aware generally of the position there.

A special survey of the district has just been concluded and, as a result of it, some modifications in the original scheme may become necessary.

The Deputy will appreciate that, in a case of this kind, it is wise to cover all contingencies before the work is put in hand.

I fear that the hope expressed in the reply to the Deputy's question on 27th March last, that a start can be made during the coming summer may not be realised, although every effort will be made to have the work commenced at the earliest possible date.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he aware of the fact that the surveys referred to were made 18 months ago, and that no other surveys have been made since? Is he also aware that an inquiry was held 18 months ago?
