Vol. 59 No. 1

Céisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imposition of Quota.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the average number of persons engaged weekly during the year 1934 in the manufacture of perambulators, perambulator chassis and bodies and shells, affected by Control of Imports (Quota No. 24) Order, 1935, and if he will state whether the quota imposed by this Order is intended to increase this employment, and, if so, if he will state to what extent, and, if not, if he will state the purpose of the quota.

Information in the form required by the first part of the question is not available. The numbers of persons, however, employed in the manufacture of perambulators on the 1st March, 1934, and 1st September, 1934, according to the voluntary returns of employment collected by my Department, were 73 and 77 respectively.

The object of the Quota Order was to assist the development of the industry and thereby provide increased employment. At this stage, however, it is not possible for me to state to what extent employment will be increased.
