Vol. 59 No. 1

Céisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Bacon Marketing Board.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if in view of the fact that fat pigs are now being refused by the curers owing to the drastic quota imposed on them by the Bacon Marketing Board, it is intended to have a bonham slaughtering scheme as well as a calf slaughtering scheme and, if so, what payment he will be prepared to give for the slaughtered bonhams.

Dr. Ryan

As special measures which, it is understood, are proving effective, have already been taken to deal with the present surplus of pigs, it is not anticipated that any scheme for the slaughter of bonhams will be necessary.

The second part of the question does not, therefore, arise.

Is the Minister in a position to give the House any estimate of the loss he has inflicted upon the pig producers of this country by the mess he has made of the pig industry in the last three months?

That is a separate question.
