Vol. 59 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fair Wages in Slate Quarries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether in connection with grants allocated for the development of slate quarries, he will take steps to see that a fair rate of wages is paid to the workers engaged in such quarries by the owners to whom development grants are made.

The general conditions attaching to the grants to which the Deputy refers include a stipulation that the rate of wages will be the rate payable in the district for similar work.

Mr. Murphy

Can the Minister say if he has ascertained that that stipulation has been generally carried out?

Yes, so far as I am aware.

Mr. Murphy

That was not my information.

Would the Minister have some investigation made as to why these quarries and quarrymen are not turning out the quantity of slates required?
