Vol. 59 No. 5

Written Answers. - Unemployment Assistance Applications.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if Michael Gearty, Cloonmore, Whitehall, Longford, was awarded a qualification certificate under the Unemployment Assistance Act; if he made application for unemployment assistance and if his application was disallowed and if he has appealed against this decision and if the unemployment assistance has yet been paid and if not why not.

Michael Gearty, Cloonmore, Whitehall, Longford, became the holder of Qualification Certificate No. N731 on the 14th November, 1934. He lodged an application for unemployment assistance on the 14th December, 1934, and on that application qualified for and received payment of 94 days' assistance up to and including the 16th April, 1935.

From and including the 17th April the application was refused by the unemployment assistance officer under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933, on the ground that the applicant was not unemployed during the operation of an Order made under Section 4 (3) of the Act prescribing the period the 17th April, 1935, to the 21st May, 1935, to be an employed period. It was open to Mr. Gearty to appeal against that determination, but no appeal was received from him nor did he lodge a further application for unemployment assistance subsequent to the date on which the Order ceased to operate.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why Patrick Heany, Ennybegs, Longford, has not been paid unemployment assistance and if he is aware that the appeal is pending for a very long time, and if the Minister can now state when he may expect payment.

Patrick Heany, Ennybegs, Longford, holder of Qualification Certificate No. N3007, has not been paid unemployment assistance for the reason that up to the present he has not lodged an application, and unless and until he does so in the prescribed manner the question of his eligibility for the receipt of assistance cannot be determined.

The appeal lodged by Mr. Heany against the determination of the unemployment assistance officer on his application for a qualification certificate was duly determined by an appeals officer and a revised certificate was duly issued to him.
