Vol. 59 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions to Railwaymen.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what steps he proposes to take so that speedy effect may be given to the provisions of the Railways Act, 1935, in the matter of granting suitable pensions to railwaymen and thus put an end to the very unsatisfactory position at present existing.

The provisions of the Railways Act, 1933, so far as they dealt with a superannuation scheme for the employees of the Great Southern Railways Company have been discharged in that a scheme was duly presented to the Railway Tribunal, fully discussed before that tribunal, and reported on as not meeting the reasonable requirements of the employees.

The question whether further provision is practicable has been engaging close attention, but no decision has yet been reached in the matter.

Will the Minister indicate when we may reasonably expect to have a decision reached?

I could not.
