Vol. 59 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Operation of Air Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (1) if he will explain the exact purport of the recent Order in Council, signed by the Governor-General, relating to the operation of air services; (2) if any agreement has been already entered into, or is in contemplation, with a British air transport company for the operation of certain important air services; (3) if the Treaty provides for a convention for the regulation of air navigation between Great Britain and Ireland and if it is his intention to have a consultation with the British Air Ministry in this connection, and (4) if he will afford the Dáil an opportunity of examining proposals for the operation of air services before any agreements are signed.

As to part (1) of the question, the Air Navigation (International Lines) Order, 1935, provides, pursuant to Article 15 of the International Convention for Aerial Navigation, for my prior authorisation to the establishment of any international airway between Saorstát Eireann and any other country, or to the creation or operation of any regular international air navigation line between Saorstát Eireann and any other country, with a view to the limitation or regulation of competition as may be considered necessary in the public interest.

As to parts (2) and (4) of the question, I will take an opportunity of making a statement in the House next week.

The answer to the first part of part (3) of the question is in the affirmative. No steps have been taken to make a special convention with Great Britain, but there has been such communication as was necessary in connection with the services contemplated at the moment.
