Vol. 59 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discharged Railwaymen's Compensation.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the Great Southern Railways Company discharged many of their officers and servants after the expiration of the seven years' period provided for in the Railways (Existing Officers and Servants) Acts for the purpose of compensation; that they have received no compensation and are suffering great hardship; if representations have been made to him to have the period entitling such men so discharged to compensation, extended from seven to 15 years; and, if so, what action he intends to take in the matter.

I am not aware that any officer or servant of the Great Southern Railways Company was discharged as a result of the amalgamation of 1925 after the expiration of the seven years' period named in the Railways (Existing Officers and Servants) Act, 1926. No case has been made to me as to the necessity for an extension of the period.

Is the Minister not aware that I have brought some cases to his notice, or at least to the notice of his Department, already by direct letter?

Not that I am aware of.

I have already done so. Shall I give the names again to the Minister?

Certainly. I shall have the cases considered.
