Vol. 59 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Negotiations With Britain.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, when negotiations are resumed for a settlement of the economic war and the other matters in dispute between the Governments of Great Britain and the Irish Free State he will inform the farmers of the Free State of such reopening of negotiations so that such of them as still have live stock and other farm produce to sell may have an opportunity afforded them of holding back till the abolition of the penal tariffs imposed by the British Government improves the prices for agricultural produce and live stock on the home market.

I have already replied to a question by the Deputy as to negotiations and I have told him definitely that no negotiations are in progress. I hope that no farmer will be tempted to speculate on the result of any negotiations which may at any time be entered into, and I hope especially that no farmers are now being tempted by the stories which are being circulated for some reason which I cannot understand. These rumours are without any foundation whatever.

What about the promises made by Fianna Fáil at the last general election? Did they not promise on every platform in the Free State that the economic war would be settled?

That is a separate question.

It is a question that wants an answer.

Not as a supplementary to this question.

I think whatever way I put it I would not get an answer.
