Vol. 59 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Levy Order in Beara Area.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the great difficulties in working the Butter Levy Order in the Beara (Kerry cattle) area, and if he will consider the advisability of exempting that area from the Order considering these difficulties and the hardships entailed on the poor people of that area.

Dr. Ryan

I am not aware that any special difficulties arose in connection with the working of the Dairy Produce (Price Stabilisation) Act in any part of the Kerry cattle area. As a result of the operations of that Act the home butter makers in the area obtained a net price for their butter which was practically equivalent on a milk basis to that obtained by creamery farmers throughout the country. In the circumstances it was not necessary to avail of the powers contained in the Dairy Produce (Price Stabilisation) Act to make special provisions for the Kerry cattle area but should the necessity for doing so arise in the future special regulations applicable to that area will be made.
