Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state (1) the number of labourers' cottages erected under the Acts of 1883 to 1896, the loans (a) sanctioned and (b) received for the purpose of these Acts, the average cost of the cottages erected thereunder and the average weekly rent payable by their occupiers; (2) the number of labourers' cottages erected under the Acts of 1906 to 1921, the loans (a) sanctioned and (b) received for the purpose of these Acts, the average cost of the cottages erected thereunder and the average weekly rent payable by their occupiers; (3) the number of labourers' cottages erected under the Acts of the Oireachtas up to 31st December, 1935, the loans (a) sanctioned and (b) received for the purpose of these Acts, the average cost of the cottages erected thereunder and the average weekly rent payable by their occupiers: (4) the amount of untenanted land allotted to agricultural labourers under the Labourers Act, 1906, and the number of persons to whom such allotments were given: (5) the total number of cottages under all the Acts (a) built and (b) in course of construction, at 31st December, 1935, the amount of the loans (a) sanctioned and (b) received, for the purpose of the several Acts, the amount required to be raised annually, and the rate per pound, in repayment of loans sanctioned, the amount of the Exchequer contribution under the several Acts during the last financial year for which the information is available and the amount received from tenants of cottages and plots during the same period.

(1) The number of labourers' cottages erected under the Acts of 1883 to 1896 was 20,351; the amount of loans under these Acts (a) sanctioned was £3,603,959; and (b) received was £3,436,783; the average cost of the cottages erected was £155 and the average weekly rent was 10½d.; (2) the number of labourers' cottages erected under the Acts of 1906 to 1919 was 20,467; the amount of loans under these Acts (a) sanctioned was £4,172,880; and (b) received was £3,760,117; the average cost of the cottages erected was £175 and the average weekly rent was ¼; (3) the number of labourers' cottages erected under Acts of the Oireachtas up to December 31st, 1935, was 5,874; the amount of loans under these Acts (a) sanctioned was £3,431,704; and (b) received was £2,052,356; the average cost of the cottages erected was £300 and the average weekly rent was 2/6; (4) the amount of untenanted land allotted to agricultural labourers under the Labourers Act, 1906, was 400 acres and the number of persons to whom allotments were given was 722; (5) (a) the total number of labourers' cottages built under all the Acts up to 31st December, 1935, was 46,692; (b) the number of labourers' cottages in course of construction at the 31st December, 1935, was 2,623; the total amount of loans sanctioned under all Acts to date for the erection of labourers' cottages was £11,208,543; the total amount of loans received was £9,249,256; the amount required to be raised for the year ended 31st March last by the local authorities in repay ment of loans raised was £234,152 and the poundage rate required was 6.5d.; the amount of the State contribution for last financial year was £76,451 and the amount collected from tenants of cottages was £177,362.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state in respect of the year 1934/35 the total sums paid by way of State grants to (a) boards of health in respect of labourers' cottages; (b) municipal and urban authorities in respect of working-class houses erected by them, and (c) private persons and public utility societies in respect of (1) new houses erected by them and (2) houses reconstructed and, further, if in respect of the grants made to private persons and public utility societies, he will distinguish between houses according to value for the erection of which grants were made.

The total sums paid by way of State grants under the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Acts, 1932-34, in respect of the year 1934-35 are as follows:— (a) To boards of health in respect of labourers' cottages £2,462; (b) to municipal and urban authorities in respect of working-class houses erected by them, £33,272; (c) to private persons and public utility societies in respect of (1) new houses erected by them, £291,950; (2) reconstructed houses, £86,792. I have no information with regard to the value of houses for the erection of which grants under the Housing (Financial and Miscellaneous Provisions) Acts, 1932-34, are paid to private persons and public utility societies.
