Vol. 60 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Mayo Rivers.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the Mayo County Council forwarded petitions to the Commissioners of Public Works over three years ago requesting that schemes be prepared for the drainage of the Gweston, Pollock and Yellow Rivers; that the necessary statutory resolutions were passed by that council signifying their willingness to contribute towards the cost of such drainage and if he will state what steps, if any, have been taken by the commissioners to prepare such schemes.

Petitions for drainage schemes under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, for the Gweston, Pollock and Yellow Rivers were received from the Mayo County Council in March, 1926, and a tentative scheme based on a rough examination of the district was submitted by the Commissioners of Public Works to the county council in April, 1927. The county council signified their approval of this tentative scheme in August, 1932. Since then more detailed inspections of the proposals have been made for the commissioners and the reports are at present under consideration. These more precise investigations indicate that the proposed drainage scheme, if carried out, will require from the Government and the county council larger grants than were necessary for the tentative scheme.
