Vol. 60 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the cause of the delay by the Irish Land Commission in dividing the Brookhill lands, Lambert Estate, Claremorris.

The purchase prices for the lands on the Brookhill Demesne to be acquired by the Land Commission have been fixed on appeal by the Appeal Tribunal and proposals for the division of the lands are at present under consideration by the Land Commission. No undue delay has occurred.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the townland of Ranahard, Ruttledge Estate, Brickens, Claremorris, where there are ten tenants whose poor law valuations are under £5, and if he will state the cause of the delay by the Irish Land Commission in dividing the holdings in that townland, from which Messrs. Gibbons and Morley were migrated over 20 years ago.

The Ruttledge Estate, which was purchased by the late Congested Districts Board, is a very large estate mostly occupied by the tenants in rundale holdings. Prior to resale it is necessary to prepare a comprehensive scheme of rearrangement and this work will be difficult and tedious. Instructions have been issued for the preparation of the preliminary estimates necessary for such a scheme, but owing to pressure of the more urgent work of acquisition and division of untenanted land, it is improbable that the resale scheme will be completed for a considerable time. The vacated holdings on the estate to which the Deputy refers are let under grazing agreements to other tenants, who have the benefit of utilising the land in the meantime. As compared with other claims on the Land Commission, the final division of the holdings does not appear to be a matter of special urgency.
