Vol. 60 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Household Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will state if he is aware that the average import price for household coal imported into the Saorstát during the month of January was 5/4 a ton greater than the average import price for coal imported in January, 1934; and if he will state whether any inquiry has been made into the causes of this increase in price; and, if so, if he will state what are the causes ascertained; and, if not, if he will state whether he proposes to cause any inquiry to be made.

Dr. Ryan

My information is that the average import price of household coal in January, 1936, shows an increase of 4/9 per ton over the price in January, 1934. Inquiry made into this difference shows that f.o.b. prices in Great Britain to all countries, including the Irish Free State, have increased. In addition, there have been increased freight charges, increased handling costs at Saorstát ports (including additional amounts for workmen's compensation and national health insurance) which account for the increased price in 1936 as compared with 1934. I might inform the Deputy that arrangements are being made for the appointment of a special committee, which will ensure that coal of good quality and at reasonable prices will be supplied to Saorstát importers.
