Vol. 60 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Coal Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he proposes to send a request to the Prices Commission requiring them to investigate whether unreasonably high retail prices and unreasonably high wholesale prices are being charged in Dublin for coal.

Dr. Ryan

The situation in respect of coal prices is under continuous review in my Department and, if at any point it appears to me that unduly high profits or charges are being made, the steps necessary to have the situation investigated by the Prices Commission will be taken.

Will the Minister say if it is not obvious to him, from the various aspects of the coal situation that have been raised during the last six weeks, that there is a prima facie case for saying that an unduly high price has been charged here?

Dr. Ryan

I think, from the statements made by the Minister for Industry and Commerce, that no case at all can be made in that respect.

So the position is this, that while a committee is being set up to investigate and safeguard certain aspects of coal, the high price and the quality of coal, as between ourselves and Great Britain, the Minister is going to take no steps to review the situation that exists here as between the importers and purchasers of coal?

Dr. Ryan

The Minister does not think it necessary, at the present time, anyway.
