Information as to the number of young men (apart from migratory labourers), up to 30 years of age, who left the Free State during the year ended December, 1935, to seek permanent employment in England, is not available in my Department.
asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can state (1) the number of Free State citizens who have emigrated to Great Britain and Northern Ireland during the year ended 31st December, 1935; (2) the number that have emigrated to U.S.A. and other foreign countries; (3) the number of people, whether of Irish or other parentage or descent, who have come to the Saorstát during the period mentioned above.
The only information available in reply to the Deputy's question is that for the number of migrants between the Saorstát and countries other than Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Continent of Europe and not within the Mediterranean Sea. As emigrants from Saorstát are defined, such persons as have lived in this country for the previous 12 months or more before leaving to take up residence for 12 months or more in the country to which they are deemed to emigrate. Similarly as immigrants are defined, such persons as come to take up residence for 12 months or more in the Saorstát from countries in which they have lived for the previous 12 months or more. The numbers of persons who, as defined above, emigrated from Saorstát Eireann in 1935 to countries other than Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Continent of Europe and not within the Mediterranean Sea were:—
