Vol. 61 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Surface Construction Costs.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the average cost of construction per mile for each of the various types of road surface in each of the years 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, and 1935.

The particulars sought are not available and cannot readily be obtained.

Can the Minister say if no steps are taken to keep a record of the cost of various types of road construction?

I would not say that no steps are taken, but there is such a variety of roads—widths and makes of roads—that it would require, I think, a fair-sized volume to give particulars of the costings of all the different types of roads—widths and lengths, different kinds of stone required, costs of stone, foundations of roads, and all that kind of material that might have to be available in making out costings. The county surveyors do make up costings for themselves, for the information of their own county councils, from their wages books and their intimate knowledge of the particular road they are asking for a costing of in their particular county; but there are no statistics of general costings for the reasons I have given.

While there may be no statistics per mile, is it not the practice of the Department to keep a record of the costings per square yard, from time to time, of different classes of road surfaces?

That has not been asked for.

Will information of that nature be available?

If the Deputy puts down a question, I will see.
