Vol. 63 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Great Southern Railways and Bus Passes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his attention has been drawn to the refusal by the Great Southern Railways Company to accept railway passes issued to members of the Irish Live Stock Exporters' and Traders' Association on buses operating between the points covered by the passes where train services have been discontinued or are not at the time operating, and whether he will introduce proposals for legislation to compel the railway company to issue traders' passes available on rail or road transport operated by the company.

I am informed by the Great Southern Railways Company that they are in communication with the Irish Live Stock Exporters' and Traders' Association relative to the availability of traders' season tickets on road services operated by the company where train services have been discontinued and in other cases. The issue of traders' season tickets is subject to the regulations of the railway company applicable thereto, which are not governed by any statutory requirements. The company state that such tickets can be obtained to include road services operated in substitution for a closed section of their railway system so long as such services form part only of the journeys to be provided for in the ticket.

I do not propose to introduce legislation in the matter.
