Vol. 63 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that acute congestion exists on the Ward Estate in the townland of Kilscoghagh, Scardane, Claremorris, and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken to divide the farm retained by the Land Commission in 1924 for the relief of the tenants on that estate.

A notice of intention to resume portion of the holding of Mark Mallet in the townlands of Cortanierin and Kilscoghagh on the Ward Estate for the purpose of relieving congestion has been gazetted under the provision of Section 31, Land Act 1933. A petition in due form has been presented praying that the lands be not resumed without further inquiry. This petition will be dealt with as early as possible.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that acute congestion exists in the townlands of Ballyglass, Curraghmore, Garrymore, Killeenrevagh and Scardane, in the parishes of Crossboyne and Milltown; that the poor law valuation of 26 farmers in those townlands is under £5 each, and if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by the Irish Land Commission to provide economic holdings for those farmers.

The Land Commission are aware that congestion exists in the townlands of Ballyglass, Curraghmore, Killeenrevagh and adjoining districts. In the neighbourhood they have acquired the lands of Heath on the Tighe Estate and a scheme for their division is in course of preparation. Proceedings are also in progress for the acquisition of the lands of Ballyglass on the Gill Estate, Killeenrevagh on the Heaney Estate, Derry on the Handcock Estate, and Garryduff South on the Broome Estate.
