Vol. 63 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Service Pensions.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that Thomas Doyle (ex-Corporal 16650) joined the National Army at Nenagh on the 2nd of August, 1922; that he was discharged from the Army on the 14th June, 1934, as being medically unfit, suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis; that he was transferred from the Curragh Military Hospital to the County Sanatorium, Roscrea, where he is at present a patient; that his claim for a pension or compensation for loss of health due to military service was rejected by the Department; that his claim for national health insurance benefit was also rejected, and that he is now absolutely penniless, and if he will state what action he proposes to take in the matter.

Ex-Corporal Thomas Doyle made application for a disability pension on the 17th June, 1934, under the terms of the Army Pensions Acts. He attributed his disability, pulmonary tuberculosis, to service in the forces in the years 1931 and 1933. No action could, however, be taken on the claim. There is no provision in the Army Pensions Acts under which a claim for disablement attributable to disease contracted subsequent to the 30th September, 1924, could be considered, and in the circumstances I regret it is not possible to take any action on the claim.

Arising out of his reply, may I ask the Parliamentary Secretary if he is aware that there is a considerable amount of hardship being suffered by quite a number of ex-Army men—cases somewhat similar to that embodied in this question—and will he take steps to remedy the matter in some way or give some consolation to these people? This man has had 12 years' service in the Army and now he is thrown out penniless.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the names and addresses of County Sligo applicants who have been granted pensions, gratuities or other moneys under the Army Pensions Act, 1932, and the amount of such pension, gratuity or other payment in each case.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the names and addresses of applicants from County Sligo under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, who have been granted pensions, and the amount of such pension in each case; the number of applicants interviewed, and the number of claims disallowed.

A reply giving details asked for is being prepared, and will be forwarded to the Deputy when completed.
