Vol. 65 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Floodings in Kerry Rivers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what is the present state of the proposals to deal with the floodings in the Brick and Cashen rivers in County Kerry, and whether it is proposed to make a drainage district covering these two rivers.

The Commissioners of Public Works have carried out a valuation and have made an engineering survey of the proposed Brick-Cashen drainage district. The survey reveals that there are many difficult problems in the way of an effective scheme, particularly in regard to the maintenance of the outfall works. Further surveys must be made, including a close study of tidal conditions in the estuary, before a decision can be reached on the best method of dealing with the outfall problem, if in fact it can be dealt with on an economic basis. This survey will be taken in hand as soon as possible, having regard to the staff position and the pressure of other urgent work.
