Vol. 65 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Allowances.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the grades or classes in the Civil Service where scales of salary are differentiated on a marriage basis, and whether in all cases allowances are paid in respect of dependent children; and, if not, if he will state the grades or classes where dependents' allowance is not so paid and the reason for such exceptions.

The reply is a lengthy statement which I propose to circulate with the Official Reports.

The following is the reply:—

Statements A and B appended give particulars of the grades in the Civil Service for which scales of pay differentiated on a marriage basis have been fixed, and indicate the position in regard to the grant of children's allowances.

Generally since 1925 scales of pay carrying children's allowances have applied where recruitment to the service takes place at an early age. Where officers are recruited at mature ages children's allowances are not granted. They are, however, awarded increases in pay on marriage. If married at the time of entry into the service they are immediately placed on the married scale of their particular grade.

The scales of salary for the grades mentioned below carry children's allowances in cases of officers whose pay is differentiated on a marriage basis.
