Vol. 65 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Linseed Cakes.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that it is impossible to get supplies of linseed cakes or meals without from seven to 14 days' delay, and whether he will take such steps as may be necessary to expedite production and delivery of these commodities by licensing imports or by any other effective method.

Dr. Ryan

My Department has received no complaints of delays in the distribution of supplies of linseed cake and meal.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, surely the answer bears on its face a denial. I have furnished a complaint to the Department. If the substance of the complaint is well founded, which it unquestionably is, will the Minister take steps to remedy the evil that exists?

Dr. Ryan

If the Deputy makes a complaint I will investigate it.

One would imagine that the Minister would have investigated it a week ago when he got the question. I submit we are entitled to assume that the facts stated therein are correct. If correct, will the Minister take steps to remedy the shortage?

Dr. Ryan

I can only make an appeal to them.

To whom?

Dr. Ryan

To the people themselves.

Is the Minister aware that he has given licences to import bran so as to deal with the same situation, and to get better supplies of bran. Does the Minister know that?

Dr. Ryan

That is a question of supplies.

This is a question of supplies too, and the Minister for Agriculture is licensing at the present moment imports of bran.

Dr. Ryan

And linseed cake also.

I hope he will take steps to remedy this situation.
