Vol. 65 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Prisoners' Maintenance.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state, in respect of each of the years 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1936, the average cost per head per week of providing food for prisoners in each convict prison in the Saorstát.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state, in respect of each of the last four years, the average over-all cost per head per week of maintaining prisoners in each Saorstát convict prison.

I am answering questions 12 and 13 together. The answer is in the form of a statement which will be circulated in the Official Report:

Notes:

(2) The figures given as "total cost" include pay and allowances of staff, food, clothing, bedding, medicines, fuel and light, repairs to buildings and gratuities;

(2) Portlaoighise convict prison is the only prison in the Saorstát used exclusively for convicts. In Mountjoy female prison female convicts are detained as well as ordinary tried and untried prisoners. A few male convicts are occasionally detained for special reasons in Mountjoy male prison. Separate figures for cost of convicts in Mountjoy, as distinguished from ordinary prisoners detained there, are not conveniently available and could be arrived at only by approximate apportionment of costs.
