Vol. 66 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Facilities in Co. Mayo.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that for the 300 families residing in the half parish of Cornboy, County Mayo, the recognised fair and market town is Belmullet; whether he is aware that although Belmullet is 22 miles distant from Cornboy, there is neither a bus nor rail service for passengers or for the transport of stock between Cornboy and Belmullet; whether having regard to the hardship endured by the people of Cornboy district because of the absence of suitable transport facilities with Belmullet, he will consider what steps can be taken to provide the necessary facilities on at least fair days in Belmullet, which occur once a month.

My functions with regard to the provision of passenger or merchandise road transport for any particular area are limited to the grant or refusal, under the provisions of the Road Transport Acts, 1932 and 1933, of the licences necessary to enable such services lawfully to be undertaken by the persons willing to provide them. I have had no application to operate either passenger or merchandise services in the area mentioned in the Deputy's question.
