Vol. 66 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Detention Places for Juvenile Delinquents.

asked the Minister for Education whether the place of detention in Summerhill is still in use, and, if so, when is it proposed to close it and provide proper accommodation for juvenile delinquents and accused who are on remand or under detention.

No change has yet been made in the accommodation of the place of detention for boys in Dublin, and owing to the very limited use which is made of this place at present it is doubtful if the expense of providing more elaborate accommodation would be justified.

The Minister appreciates the necessity for early attention to this matter?

The number of boys in detention in the Summerhill place of detention at present is so small that if the numbers continue at the rate which we have had recently, there would seem to be no necessity for providing an entirely new place of detention.
