Vol. 67 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter of Animals.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he will state to what extent the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1935, is now in operation, and what is the cause of the delay in making it generally operative.

The Act is in force in Dublin County Borough and in Dun Laoghaire Borough since 1st February, 1937. In Dublin County Borough and Dun Laoghaire Borough the victuallers generally were already using "humane killers" for slaughtering animals. In the remainder of the Saorstát the use of such instruments is not general, and it is necessary to afford the butchers an opportunity of obtaining approved instruments and training their employees to use them. It is proposed to bring the Act into operation in the remainder of the Saorstát at an early date. The Act will then apply and have effect in the remaining urban sanitary districts. It will not have effect in a county health district until an Order is made by the Minister under Section 4, conferring on the board of health the power to regulate the slaughter of animals.
