Vol. 67 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castlepollard Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state what is the exact position as regards the turning on of the water supply for the town of Castlepollard, County Westmeath; if it is a fact that the trustees of the Lyster-Smythe estate have prevented the commissioner administering the affairs of the Westmeath Board of Health from having the water turned on; if any negotiations are in progress; and, if so, will the people of Castlepollard be consulted in the matter.

The proposed source of supply is Lough Lene. When pipes were being laid to convey water to the town, objection was raised by certain persons to water being taken from the lough. Negotiations were entered into, and I am informed agreement has now been reached which will obviate any resort to compulsory acquisition of the water rights. The matter is one for the commissioner, acting on legal advice.
