Vol. 67 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Planting of Trees.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the number of acres of land in Saorstát Eireann planted with trees during the year 1936, and how many thereof are situate in the County of Mayo, and also the amount of money spent during the said year in wages in connection with afforestation (a) in the whole of Saorstát Eireann and (b) in the County Mayo.

It would be a matter of difficulty to state the actual planting done in a calendar year, as the planting season overlaps such a year. Returns are therefore given for planting year 1935-36 (ending in May, 1936). In that year the total area planted in An Saorstát was 6,919 acres, and in County Mayo was 66¾ acres. The amount paid in wages to forestry workers in An Saorstát was £68,549, and in County Mayo was £772. These figures include foremen's wages. The figures given refer, of course, to State afforestation only. The forestry division has no definite information as to the extent of private planting which may have been done in these years.
