Vol. 68 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Factories in County Clare.

Mr. Hogan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) how many new factories were established in County Clare since 1931; (b) the towns or other places where such new factories are situated, and the registered names of each of these factories; (c) the number of people employed in each of these factories (1) men, (2) women; and (d) the number of inspections made of each of these factories by the factory inspectors since their establishment.

Since 1931, there were, according to the registers maintained under the Factory and Workshop Acts, 29 new factories and seven new workshops established in County Clare. Twenty-two of the factories were creameries in various parts of the county. Of the remainder, two were sawmills at Clooney and Ennistymon; a factory for the manufacture of laces, elastics and inside soles at Ennis; a factory for the production of whiting at Ennis; a furniture and joinery factory at Clonroadmore, Ennis; and a bakery at Ennis. The remaining factory was an electricity station at the Ennis Mental Hospital. I have not information at my disposal which would enable me to state the numbers employed by these factories and workshops. Each of the 36 new factories and workshops was inspected once and 12 were inspected twice by inspectors from my Department.
