Vol. 68 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Services in County Cavan.

Mr. Hogan (for Mr. Norton)

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that plans were prepared by the Cavan County Board of Health for the erection of a surgical hospital, a new sanatorium, and the extension of the sewerage system to the county home; whether he is further aware that some of these plans were under consideration for more than four years; and if he will state what has caused the delay in giving sanction to them.

I am aware that plans were prepared for a new sanatorium and extension of the sewerage system. In the case of the surgical hospital, only a lay-out of the site originally chosen by the board was prepared by their architects. This site was not suitable, being too limited to permit of buildings of the extent proposed to be erected thereon, and it had to be abandoned. The selection of a suitable site was rendered difficult owing to the irregular nature of the ground around Cavan. A lay-out of the new site selected has been prepared by the board's architects and is at present under consideration in the Department. Owing to the configuration of the site, the lay-out requires careful consideration with a view to avoiding expensive underbuilding. In none of the cases referred to is it correct to say that plans have been under consideration for more than four years. The plans for the new sanatorium were received in July, 1936, and, after examination, considerable revision was necessary. The amended plans are at present being considered, and a decision thereon will be given as soon as possible. The plans for the extension of the sewerage system have been approved.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say if arrangements have been made to receive a deputation from the Cavan Board of Health in connection with the outstanding differences in respect of the erection of these hospitals?

That is so. Some time ago, as the result of a request from Cavan County Council, arrangements were made to receive a deputation consisting of members of the county council and board of health on Thursday next to discuss with them some of the outstanding difficulties.
