Vol. 68 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Turf.

Mr. Hogan (for Mr. Davin)

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he had made regulations under the Turf (Use and Development) Act, 1936, in reference to the quantity of turf to be sold and delivered by coal retailers, and, if so, whether he will state the total quantity of turf which coal retailers will be required to sell and deliver to purchasers of coal during the year 1937.

The Minister has made no regulations under the Turf (Use and Development) Act, 1936, in reference to the quantity of turf to be sold and delivered by coal retailers. The second part of the question does not, therefore, arise.

Can the Minister state whether it is true that it is highly problematical that there will be any supplies of turf available for sale in view of the fact that, due to the mishandling of the bogs that were bought by the Turf Development Board and stripping the skin off the bog over a wide area, the greater part of that bog has turned into a black swamp out of which no turf can be gleaned at all.

If the Deputy could contrive to put his speech in the form of a question and to give me adequate notice, I might try to answer it.

You have notice of it now. You might come down and inspect the turf.
