Vol. 69 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cussen Commission of Inquiry.

asked the Minister for Education whether it is proposed to implement the recommendation of the Cussen Commission of Inquiry into the reformatory and industrial school system that in future the appointment of teachers to industrial schools should be made on the same conditions as operate in the case of teachers appointed to national schools.

I have given careful consideration to the recommendations of the Cussen Commission of Inquiry into the reformatory and industrial schools system, including such recommendations as relate to the appointment of teachers of literary subjects in those schools, and to the conditions under which such teachers will serve. While the examination of all the issues arising out of the recommendations has not yet been completed, I am favourably disposed towards the acceptance of the principle contained in the recommendations as far as such recommendations have reference to the appointment in future of teachers of literary subjects.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he in a position to say, in view of the fact that he is favourably disposed towards these recommendations, that he intends to safeguard completely the position of those teachers, at present teaching in industrial schools, who are not appointed in accordance with this recommendation?

That is a separate question.
