Vol. 69 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Cork Probation Officer.

asked the Minister for Justice if any representations have been made to him as to the desirability of appointing a lady probation officer for Cork; and, if so, if he will state when he proposes to make the appointment.

The present position as regards persons placed on probation in Cork appears to be, on the whole, satisfactory, thanks to the co-operation of local religious and charitable organisations. I am not convinced that a change from the present system to a paid official system is desirable or would be generally approved.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, would he not say that the same conditions operate in Dublin City as in Cork in so far as it relates to the co-operation of religious bodies?

The Deputy can hardly compare Cork with Dublin.

The Minister said that in a very low voice.

Is not the Minister aware that representations have already been made to his Department as to the desirability of appointing a lady probation officer for Cork City?
