Vol. 69 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Playing Grounds.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the great necessity that exists of providing proper playing grounds attached to national schools, and if he has any scheme in contemplation for the provision of such playing spaces, which are necessary for the health and safety of school-going children.

I am aware of the necessity of providing playing grounds attached to national schools and it is the policy of my Department to see to it, where possible, that adequate playground space is provided when sites for new schools are being acquired. Managers of national schools to which suitable and adequate playgrounds are not attached are encouraged to acquire additional land for the purpose of providing playground space. In the case of vested national schools, grants are given for enclosing and treating playgrounds and for the erection of covered playgrounds.
