Vol. 69 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inistioge Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware (a) that the building of new schools at Inistioge, County Kilkenny, has been sanctioned; that a free site has been provided; that a sum of £297 10s. towards the building of the schools and a sum of £84 5s. towards the levelling of the site have been contributed locally and have been paid in to Departmental funds over a year ago; (b) that the existing schools have been closed by order of the sanitary authority; that the vestry of the local chapel is being used as a temporary school; that the children attending these schools are largely of the working classes; if he will state what steps he proposes to take to expedite the erection of these schools; and (c) if he will have inquiry made in his Department as to the delay in the matter.

A grant for the erection of new schools at Inistioge has been sanctioned by my Department, but certain difficulties arose which, I am informed, made it necessary for the Commissioners of Public Works to readvertise for tenders. Fresh tenders have been received and are being examined by the Commissioners. It is expected that the work of erecting the new schools will begin at an early date.

I am aware that the existing schoolhouse has been closed, and that as a temporary arrangement school work is being carried on in the vestry of the local church.
