Vol. 69 No. 8

Written Answers. - Drainage of County Mayo Rivers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what the position is as regards the drainage of the River Moy, County Mayo, and if he is in a position to state definitely when it is proposed to put the scheme into operation.

Particulars of a drainage scheme estimated at the time to cost roughly £215,000 were submitted to the County Councils of Mayo and Sligo in April, 1928, with an intimation of the contributions that would be required from both bodies in order to make the scheme economic for the rated occupiers of affected lands in the district.

The councils have not so far notified the Commissioners of Public Works if they are prepared to contribute the necessary free grants and further investigation of the scheme has, in the circumstances, not been proceeded with.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what progress has been made with the proposed scheme for the drainage of the Clare-Dalgan river, County Mayo; if the Mayo and Galway County Councils have been communicated with in connection with the proposed scheme; and if so, with what results.

The reports of the engineers and valuers on the proposed drainage scheme for the Clare-Dalgan river disclose that very large free grants would be required to render the scheme economic for the occupiers of benefited lands. The execution of the scheme would have serious effects upon the flooding of lands in the existing Turloughmore drainage district, and unless and until an improved outfall can be provided, which is not considered possible under the existing drainage code, it will not be practicable to proceed with the formation of the Clare-Dalgan drainage district.
