asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the number of acres planted by the Forestry Department during the years 1926-1936, inclusive, and the cost for each year; and (b) the number of foresters and foremen employed by the Department for each of these years and the salaries paid to them.

The number of acres of the State Forest lands planted during each planting season from 1926-36 inclusive together with the expenditure on cultural operations which includes cost of preparing ground, planting, etc., were as follows:—

The planting season begins about October and continues generally until the end of March but may be extended for some weeks later under suitable conditions.

The number of foresters and foremen employed by the Department during each of the financial years 1926-36 inclusive was as follows:—

The total salaries paid to foresters and foremen are readily ascertainable only in respect of recent years as these charges were formerly bulked with those relating to cost of labour generally. However the following statement may be taken as being approximately correct for the period from 1928-29 onwards:—
