Vol. 69 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Youghal Embankment.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the embankment for the protection of the Mudlands, Youghal, County Cork, from the inroads from the mouth of the Blackwater has broken down, and in consequence the lands have been partially submerged, and if he has received an application for a grant from the Employment Schemes Vote for its repair; and, if so, what action it is intended to take in the matter.

Representations have been made to the Commissioners of Public Works regarding the conditions of the embankments in the Youghal Drainage District.

This district was constituted under the Act 5 & 6 Vict., cap. 89. The Act provides for the election by the proprietors of the lands of trustees, who will be responsible for the maintenance of the drainage works as set out in the final award. It is understood that the responsibility of the landholders in this respect has not been discharged.

An application for a grant from the Employment Fund has been received for the purpose of carrying out repairs to the embankment, but in the circumstances it is not proposed to accede-to the request.
