Vol. 69 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Fishing Industry.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total number of men employed and the total number of Saorstát owned (1) steam boats, (2) motor boats, (3) sail or rowing boats engaged solely in sea fishing during the year ended 30th September, 1937, and the total value of the fish (including shell fish of all sorts) landed by such boats; and the total value of fresh fish imported for sale from non-Saorstát sources during the same period.

Particulars of the men and boats engaged in the sea fishing industry are collected annually for the calendar year. Those in respect of the year 1937 will be available towards the end of February next; and if the Deputy will then repeat in modified form the first part of his question I can let him have the figures. The value of the landings made by our fishermen during the twelve months ended 30th September, 1937, was approximately £150,000. The total value of the wet fish and shell fish, fresh or frozen, imported during the like period, was about £208,000.
